About Bill’s Bus Benches

Our Strong Towns local conversation, in partnership with the Chris Kegel Foundation, is the proud recipient of a $1,500 grant from America Walks. The Strong Towns approach has always included identifying the next small thing one can take to improve the community. Do that thing. Repeat. The proceeds from this grant will do just that - further a popular effort undertaken by our group late last year to build Bill’s Bus Benches.

“Bill” is Bill Sell. Bill was a tireless and advocate for transit matters, housing, parks…it’s a long list. It was his work and a bit of inspiration from other local conversations that got us to take the relatively simple step of building and placing benches at bus stops that lack any basic amenities for those awaiting their ride. It’s a popular idea that has found traction in Charlotte, Milwaukee, and Berkeley, CA.

Want to help? Carpentry might not be your thing, but the sky is the limit here. We’re a growing group in a fast-growing national organization that thrives on the ideas brought be people who love their cities and want to make them more people-friendly, financially resilient, and enjoyable to live in.
