February '24 Strong Milwaukee Meeting Recap
Strong Towns Metro MKE welcomed several new members and set a new high water mark for attendance with 28 creative, opinionated, and ambitious people exchanging ideas and making plans.
How are we being found? Discord. Facebook. Instagram. LinkedIn. Local Conversations. Crucial content creators on YouTube like CityNerd and Not Just Bikes. Word of mouth.
More importantly…WHY are we being found?
One Wisconsin native, recently returned from Texas, related the story of being “invited to leave” his neighborhood association after advocating for more inclusive zoning that would have allowed for more affordable, diverse housing. Another new member, infant in tow, related his desire to raise his son in a place in a walkable place where life’s basic necessities don’t require an automobile.
By and large, these are not novel reasons. All of us are here because we love where we live, we recognize what has gone wrong in designing these places over the past 50, 60, 70 years, and we know we need to do something to course correct and make our neighborhoods and cities safer, more user-friendly, and more financially resilient, for ourselves and the generations that will follow us.
