North-South BRT
Strong Towns Metro MKE members showed up, virtually and in person, to encourage good design choices for the proposed North-South Bus Rapid Transit line, which generally runs along 27th street. It would be the second BRT in Milwaukee County.
Sam: “Street parking takes priority over bus-only lanes in many areas that already have plenty of private parking/alleys. Street parking is seldom used as a result. Center Running Lanes were replaced with side-running. Not a deal-breaker for BRTs, but in lieu of having private parking curb cuts everywhere on the route, it creates stop-and-go condition for the bus. Excessive lane width for cars, encouraging speeding. Protected bike lanes could easily be fit in for a number of the stretches (e.x. Teutonia).”
Theresa: “I would like to see less street parking along the route (could be used for more protected bike lane, which I would LOVE to see through the entire route tbh). Narrower streets would aid in slowing traffic and making it safer overall. Please commit to making 27th/Layton Blvd. safe for all pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders! People in cars have so many route options (and parking options) -- this is a single street that should improve the lives of everyone outside cars!”
Bryce: “I [attended] the noon virtual meeting about CONNECT 2….overall, I think MCTS is doing a great job of presenting this the public. While I have some issues w/ the proposed design, I didn't see or hear a single person who was actively hostile during the call. Questions at the end primarily focused on figuring out why certain design choices were made.”
